Isn't it wonderful to drive on a ever winding road in the thick rain forest with countless hairpin bends, viewpoints and waterfalls?! One such great experience I had was on the popular Hana Highway on the eastern coast of Maui, the best Hawaiian island. Being a waterfall-oholic I went crazy! I had to stop at every waterfalls to take pictures. Rain allowed photography only at some places. Here are a few of them.

Waterfalls on Hana Highway were countless, many of them were nameless, some lived only during the rainstorm. The roar of swollen streams could be heard from far. It is wonderful to drive over the narrow and old mossy bridges under which the wicked streams create vibrations. Oh! lovely water!

I first had the glimpse of Waikamoi stream thundering down into a gorgeous waterfalls. There was a pullout and I stopped. It was raining and it was not possible to go near the falls because of overgrowth and overflowing water. Even the roadside view was fantastic. Next same happened with Wailua Iki Falls. Water moved downstream ferociously in the relentless rainstorm. After driving couple of miles I was happy to see the Kalpaula Gulch Falls in the subdued rain. I took some time to use tripod for longer exposure. A mile further was Hanawi Falls on roadside. Very impressive with many forks and cascades.
There are no pullouts for viewing many waterfalls along the road. One of them was Paihi Falls and it was quite impressive. Its neighbor Wailua Falls is one beauty. Easy to access and hence easy to photograph! I always wondered if there are so many wonderful waterfalls on roadside why would anyone hike miles to reach any other waterfalls in the rainstorm. Well, I did hike to Waimoku Falls in the rainstorm just to know why? :)
History of Hana Highway dates back to 15th century. This highway as we see now is completed by 1940 with 52 bridges. In August 2000 it was designated as a Millenium Legacy Trail. And in June 2001 it was listed in National Register of Historic Places.

The drive on Hana Highway is so scenic and it is a lovely experience. Driving on this narrow winding road actually puts one's driving experience into test! Other than Hana drive, attractions in Maui include the Haleakala National Park, and numerous beaches. Few pictures of beaches in Lahaina and Kehei. If you have more time island hopping will be great fun!

I am a huge fan of waterfalls... We always looked for them when we traveled. Sure would love to add these wonderful ones to my "collection" Maybe someday!

Oh! You seem to know so much about Kerala! Yes, I want to visit Kerala some time soon :) Till now I have visited few place like Waynad, Sulthan Bathery, Silent Valley, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Guruvayur, Trivandrum and some more when I went for extensive trekking few years ago. But, still don't have that feeling- I had been to Kerala! I have another very long list of places to visit there :)

DeleteOMG, these are spectacular waterfalls, and you got plenty there. The waters are also heavy, i am envious. I also posted a falls today, but the waters during our dry season is so small.

ReplyDeleteHmmm that is true. I can understand what you are saying :) I myself from coastal hilly region in India and I find driving is very tedious, well here that is because no one follows driving rules or manners which is different altogether.
