Random Thoughts- Pareidolia in Rocks Part II

I had posted an article on Pareidolia in rocks earlier and now found more pictures which made me think of a sequel! I am finding it very interesting now :) Repeating- Pareidolia, in simple, is a term used to seeing faces or animals in clouds and rock formations. Well, the term has much deeper and scientific meaning which you can read in Wiki. We hear about sleeping giants and rock faces which are common examples.

Arches National Park Pareidolia

Here I see a hand of a witch! Well, I haven't seen a witch in real though, if they exist :) Also it is not a rock as the post-heading says, its a TREE! Arches National Park is home for so many such weird trees and rock formations. Now, it has become a hobby for me!

Arches National Park Pareidolia

In Arches NP I went walking around the Balanced Rock. From different angles it looked different. From one angle it looked like a bust of an english man. And see this picture on the right ... it looks like a devil is sneaking out of the ground! Do you see the crooked mouth, weird nose and the eye?

Natural Bridges NM Pareidolia

The predators from Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah ... Don't you see a lurking big cat? I see the tooth and its tail too :) And on the right- an Eagle with its kill.

Arches National Park Pareidolia
On the right is a rock formation I found along the trail to Landscape Arch. I see a Native American warrior watching the far horizon! The natural forces such as wind, water, snow and heat together carve these masterpieces slowly over time. We don't know what will emerge from a plain looking boulder! Time only will tell huh?

I have been reading so many travel stories from south-west and that pulls me again and again back there. I am surprised to know that there are people with passion for arches and natural bridges. They go looking for these natural structures in the desert rocky landscapes to walk over them! I have read about the stories of people who just go into the these deserts for nothing but peace! Some just to find more and more cliff dwellings in the remotest holes in the high cliffs.

Nature's art for us to interpret! Well, it is my imagination!

Do you see what I see here?

  1. I love your point of view. I saw a witch. Every day for a whole year. I had Julia Randall in first grade in Payson, Arizona back in 1960 in her 53 year of a 57 year teaching career.

  11. That first photo looks like a finger flicking -- and yes it does look like a witch's creepy hand too. These rock formations look incredible and I can just imagine what different interpretations people have of these.

  13. Pareidolia -- I've been seeing faces and animals in clouds for over 70 years! But just now learned there's a word for it. Thanks for the addition to my vocabulary. And yes, Canyonlands and Arches -- and the whole Southwest really -- are full of these wonderful formations that just give rise to stories and interpretations -- pareidolia! Wonderful word, wonderful pictures. Thanks.
