Kashi Yatra- Canines of Kashi :)



Austere clad sadhus are favorite subjects to photograph in Varanasi? For me there were many favorite subjects including canines! I am sharing few pics here. Are you surprised? Why am I talking about dogs of all other sacred things in Kashi?

Well, Kashi is synonymous with death, River Ganga, Vishwanath and Vishalakhsi temples and it is also the abode of Kal Bhairav- a fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva (or sometimes considered as one of his deputies) who guards the Shaktipeethas. It is believed that visit to Kashi is incomplete without the darshan of Kal Bhairav. And the only loyal being found in this whole universe- Dog is Kal Bhairav's divine vehicle! And they are plenty in number all around the ghats. They are very friendly, non-barking and non-biting type. Mostly they lazy around. These peacefully sleeping dogs were one of my favorites!

    Just like cats in Greece, they're everywhere? It's nice that you feature them. I like to see what else is there for the reader to fully get a whole picture of the place. Do these dogs belong to someone? Or the community take turns feeding them?

      They are street dogs. Some boatmen, or locals or pilgrims feed them. They get plenty of food as there is a lot of garbage.

    Nice post, Kusum. Kal Bhairav temple always has numerous dogs in its vicinity.

      Yes! In Ujjain there are so many inside the temple complex!

      For Hindus Dog is significant. The four dogs represent four Vedas and these dogs always follow the God like "watchdogs of ultimate truth" and help God find the pure souls! So, dog is not a mere dog in Kashi :)
