A few days ago (11th July) I read an article on Deccan Herald Weekly which says masala dosa is among ten dishes to try before you die! How true? I was tempted to have a post on dosas from my favorite eatery in Bangalore. Here it goes ...
I lived in Jayanagar 4th block, Bangalore a decade ago. There were few South Indian fast food joints I loved the most. Ganesh Darshan- Dosa Camp is one of them. This is the best Dosa Joint I have ever been to! One of the places for the best Masale Dose! And filter coffee. Those days, I always had a masale dose for lunch and idly-sambar for dinner. Even now, when I am in Jayanagar I make it a point to have a Masale Dose here. When in Bangalore, my sister and niece go long way to Jayanagar only to have masale dose and that strong filter coffee!

I love to stand at the pick-up counter and watch this cook make dosas. He makes at least 10 to 14 (or more during rush hours) masale dose to perfection in one go. The red chutney smeared on inner side of dose gives a spicy kick and the masale (potato filling) is perfect mashed potato with Indian spices. The coconut-coriander chutney served with dose is finger-licking tasty! One can ask for more chutney or some sagu (a spicy vegetable curry) and they never say no!
Apart from masale dose, on the menu are rawe (samolina) dose, set dose, eerulli (onion) dose, akki rotti, ragi rotti, idly-sambar, deep fried mangaluru buns and few more ... Set dose is another favorite of mine! This fluffy rice-lentil pancake is served as a set of two with chutney and very delicious-spicy vegetabe sagu (curry). Yum Yum! Filter coffee is the must-have item with these dosas.
If you love Dosa and you happen to be in Bangalore- this is the place for you!

ReplyDeleteRahul Ji, Thank you! And glad you celebrated having dosa :)
DeleteVery interesting post. Only yesterday I was going through a draft on Masala Dosa sent in by my younger brother from Cochin. By way of illustration I needed some photographs which I could download from the net. I wish to utilize your second photograph with more than 10 dosas on the long pan as there is a reference to it in the article. Kindly permit. Dosas in Bangalore look a little thicker as compared to their cousins elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteWell, you could use if the picture is not modified and is used for non-commercial use. Make sure you link the picture back to my blog.
DeleteMasala Dosa is my fav too! During my stay in Bangalore, I visit one small dosa shop..he used to make 14 different varieties of dosa and they all taste fabulous! If you haven't yet, do try the masala dosa of Hotel Saravana Bhavan...
ReplyDeleteThanks Vaish! I hear much about Saravana Bhavan everywhere! So, I tried food in SB of Sunnyvale, California, SB of Chennai. People may strongly disagree but, sorry to say my experience was different.
