Initiatives- Save Tiger in India

Project Tiger is one of the successful wildlife conservation initiatives in India. This project was launched in the year 1973. The project formulated a plan with an ecological approach and constituted many Tiger Preserves in various bio-geographical areas all over India. These preserves have core areas where there is no human activity.

The project supported by Central Government of India with some funds from WWF resulted in excellent recovery of habitats. Tiger is considered to be an indicator of eco-system stability because it fits at the top of the food chain. For tiger to survive it needs a good prey base which highly depends on the green forest vegetation. So conserving tigers was to conserve the eco-system as a whole. Now, the  number of Royal Bengal tigers is between 1500 to 1800! Karnataka state tops with 300 tigers in the latest census in 2011. Seeing a tiger in the wild is a fascinating experience!

This picture is contributed by my niece Madhu. She is a budding travel enthusiast and keeps clicking interesting things. I love this painting on the wall in Jayanagar, Bangalore by municipal corporation. The line on the top in local alphabets (regional language Kannada) says ... Let me live.

Update: Incidentally saw on TV that on July 15th there is telethon - Save Tiger Campaign by NDTV-Aircel.

  1. There are plenty of wildlife conservation initiatives happening all over the world. If we don't support them, they would soon be extinct..and we can only show them in pictures to the next generation. Hope the poachers and hunters understand this!

    1. More than poachers and hunters people who buy the products which require killing of wildlife should understand. If there is no demand poachers cease to exist!

    1. Thank you Michelle! Because of this project there is some improvement in increasing the numbers. But, now tourism industry is bringing too much crowd into the forests.
