Monochrome- A Typewriter, a piece of history

Angel Island typewriter immigration station

In today's world where virtual keyboards are used a Typewriter- sounds ancient huh? Well, this typewriter is definitely an antique at Angel Island State Park located in the San Francisco Bay. Angel Island was an immigration station during World War II. The typewriter was one among the many articles that belonged to the station and used by the detained immigrants.

  7. These typewriters were in vogue even till the mid eighties. I had them in the offices that I worked. There would be multiple drafts from the stenographer before a letter could be finalized. Suddenly by end 80's they suddenly disappeared and computers & printers took their place !

    1. Hmm, one has to be a perfect typist I think otherwise so much of paper is wasted right? Computers reduced wastage of papers but, produced electronic waste!

    2. Manual type writers had their own charm. Stenography was an art. Shorthand & typing skills were absolutely essential to survive in those days. Alas the breed of stenographers has almost vanished.Today's manager types his own letters & corrects them suitably. The age of beautifully worded letter has gone - to be replaced by texting & e-mails.

  10. I first tried typing on one quite like this a long, long time ago. I love the sound it makes when the type-bars hits that roller.
I love this picture. Reminds of the antique one back home. :)
