Modern Architecture- Sea Ranch Chapel, California

Can you guess what is this bird like structure? Well, even I would have thought! Long time ago I read about a chapel on California's Sonoma coast, in a small town called Sea Ranch. I thought of visiting it when I drove north. Not very difficult to find, it is right there east-side of the Highway-1 in Sea Ranch.

When we think of architecture, first things that come to our mind are- long bridges, skyscrapers and  some complicated buildings. I would never think of a little chapel resembling an angel's gown :) It is just one little room which can hold at most 40 people, with this fancy roof inspired by winged forms. It seems it was completed in a little less than a year by local artisans. The brightly colored stained-glass windows are beautiful.

Sitting in a peaceful setup this whimsical building is truly an architectural wonder. Just like a bird ready to take off!

    1. It is in Sea Ranch, CA. If you are driving from San Francisco (ie south) it is just before Gualala Point Park, on your right hand side of CA-1.
