In the previous post I had mentioned about grandeur of the St Peter's Basilica. Next to the basilica is the Museum. Well, I remember saying "my neck hurts" many times! You know why? Ceilings are more grand and artistic than whatever is displayed on the walls and statues! The paintings, the gilding work, the frames and so on ... just breathtaking ...
Are you thinking the above picture is of a wall? And in the niche those are the sculptures? You are wrong!! It is a ceiling and that is absolutely flat painting which had 3D effect! How genius huh? Jaw-dropping! I don't remember looking at those maps in the Map Gallery or any other marble sculptures around ... I was looking up all the time at the ceiling :)
In India tourists see more of very ornate temples with intricately carved granite sculptures and amazing architecture everywhere. Similarly in Italy I visited basilicas, cathedrals and churches which were treasure of art and architecture. Though religious, breathtakingly beautiful paintings and marble sculptures mesmerize the tourists. Believe me there is a lot more in these museums only that I didn't see some and in few more places taking pictures was not allowed. IMO, the ceiling paintings are the best!

DeleteI surely enjoyed your post and photos, they are all spectacular. If you didn't tell us they are flat paintings, i wouldn't know. The Museum is missed in my visit and the Sistine Chapel is already closed at 4pm when i arrived. I am so sorry, but time didn't really allow me. I can totally relate to your aching neck as i had it too in St Peter's Basilica.
